SUMMARY The report presents the results of an investigation of the California sand dab (Citharichthys sordidus) of the coast of California. The general morphology and systematic characters of the species are described on the basis of the literature and from material obtained from Monterey I'.ay and the fishing grounds off San Francisco. The sand dab ranges in distribution from British Columbia to Lower California, liathymetrically it occurs in depths from 10 to 100 fathoms. The largest specimens reach 400 millimeters in length and rarely exceed two pounds in weight. Adults are commonly 160 to 300 milli- meters long. The spawning season of the sand dab is from July to early Sep- tember, the peak of the season being in August..
