San Donato is one of the most oldest church in Genoa, the current building, built at the beginning of the twelfth century and expanded in the second half of the same century, is the most significant example of the Genoese Romanesque style. On the right side of the church there is a large baroque shrine of the eighteenth century, with a statue of the Madonna and Child, the work of Giovanni Domenico Casella known as Scorticone (1595-1648), surmounted by the representation of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove. Of particular interest is the octagonal bell tower set on the tiburio (it is more properly a "nolare tower", as it is incorporated into the structure of the main building, typical of the archaic Romanesque, the only example of this type in Genoa), decorated with saw-tooth friezes and a triple order of mullioned windows and three-light windows.
