The newly decorated Maypole being put into position at Barwick in Elmet, near Leeds, West Yorkshire UK. Barwick in Elmet has the largest Maypole in the UK and the wooden pole is taken down every 3 years for redecoration and put back up on the last Monday in May when the village puts on a traditional Maypole day celebration. Due to health and safety concerns the pole is now lowered into position by a crane instead of the old method of wooden ladders ropes and man power. However the pole has to be manually carried by local people from nearby Hall Tower Hill to the center of the village and ropes steadied by teams of people in order to keep the maypole vertical as the hole is repacked with earth around the maypole
