Informations supplémentaires:
A vestige of Halifax’s old waterfront and one of the few remaining groups of early waterfront industrial buildings in North America, this nine-building enclave is a major landmark in Halifax and a National Historic Site of Canada. These waterfront buildings were slated for demolition in the late 1960s to build an expressway, known as Harbour Drive, along the waterfront. However, thanks to local advocacy and co-operation among government agencies and private developers, the buildings were spared and rehabilitated. The Historic Properties development (1972-73) was one of the first large-scale Canadian development initiatives to use restored heritage buildings as the cornerstone for the commercial revitalization of a blighted waterfront area. This project continues to demonstrate the viability of heritage conservation as a strategy for urban revitalization.
