Berlin, Mitte, Mohrenstrasse U bahn station entrance and Statue of Prince Leopold I of DessauThe station is to be renamed Anton-Wilhelm-Amo. The name Moor street is considered derogatory and has unpleasant colonial connotations. Anton-Wilhelm-Amo was the first black student at a German University and became the first black University Professor in Europe. There has been considerable debate about this. The BVG first proposed that the U-Bahn station be renamed Glinkastrasse after the nearby street. This was rejected when it was suggested that Michail Iwanowitsch Glinka, after whom the street was named, was associated with anti-Semitism. The underground station was opened in 1908 and, according to the BVG, has already had several names - Kaiserhof (1908-1950), Thälmannplatz (1950-1986), Otto-Grotewohl-Straße (1986-1991) and Mohrenstrasse since 1991.
