Hall of Memory in Centenary Square, Birmingham, Central Library, Baskerville House. Photographed on 29 July 2026. The Library of Birmingham opened in 2013 on Centenary Square, replacing Birmingham Central Library and becoming one of the city's most recognisable contemporary civic buildings. Its location beside the Hall of Memory, Birmingham Repertory Theatre and other cultural buildings makes the square a concentrated record of the city's changing civic architecture. Birmingham's centre has been repeatedly reshaped by transport, retail and civic redevelopment, particularly around New Street, the Bullring and Centenary Square. Birmingham Library adds to the architectural and local-history record of Birmingham, where materials, inscriptions and surrounding buildings help explain the site's relationship with its neighbourhood. Seen in its Birmingham setting, Birmingham Library connects historic fabric with the contemporary streetscape and can be compared with later restoration, alteration or changes of use.
