A pint glass of hazy golden beer stands on a polished wooden counter beside a small tabletop sign displaying the Track Brewing branding. The beer has a modest white head and a warm amber-gold colour, with the surface of the bar and wood-panelled background suggesting an indoor licensed venue. Sonoma is a pale ale produced by Manchester-based Track Brewing Co and is associated with the city's independent craft-beer scene. The still life combines a recognisable brewery brand with a freshly served drink. Pubs and taprooms have to balance changing consumer tastes, staffing, energy costs, commercial rents and competition from supermarket alcohol retailing. The glass and small brewery display turn a routine purchase into a photograph of beer presentation: colour, clarity, pour and branded point-of-sale material are all visible. Track is part of a generation of breweries that established a local following by selling distinctive pale ales through specialist bars and other licensed outlets. The difference between a producer's own premises and a pub stocking its beer is important when interpreting the image. British real-ale and craft-beer vocabulary can overlap in casual speech, but cask beer, keg beer and bottle-conditioned beer are distinct dispensing formats. The two visible objects, beer and display, convey the relationship between maker and drinker in a recognisable bar setting. The small illustrated card is placed next to the glass at customer eye level, a form of point-of-sale brewery identity common in the independent beer trade. A draught pint in a pub also involves the upkeep of dispense lines, glassware, refrigeration and cellar conditions. For small brewers, visibility at the point of serving can help customers recognise a beer they may later encounter in another venue. Manchester's brewing culture includes both established businesses and newer independent producers whose names have become familiar on local tap lists.
