The Cloth Hall (covered market) in Tournai dates from 1610. A first wooden hall had been built in the 13th century following an intervention by the bishop of Tournai, Gautier de Marvis. The city, which had violated the cathedral chapter's right of asylum, unable to pay the fine, was forced to abandon buildings to the Church. Rebuilt in 1610 after a storm, the Cloth Hall in Renaissance style is still very impressive today at the Grand Place in Tournai. The author, master mason Quentin Ratte would have worked according to the plans of Jacques Van den Steen. The building collapsed again in 1881 but was rebuilt identically. Today, it hosts exhibitions and other occasional events such as the gastronomic event "Tournai des Saveurs". In the course of 2021, the cloth hall will undergo a major renovation of the interior.
