Saint David Lewis (1616 – 1679) was a Jesuit Catholic priest and martyr, remembered as Tad y Tlodion – Father of the Poor. He was born in Abergavenny, brought up as a Protestant but after the death of both his parents in 1638 he set off for Rome to become a Catholic priest. Eventually returning to Wales where he joined in 1648 the Jesuit Mission of St. Francis Xavier at a place called ‘The Cwm'. He was to work there for the next thirty years. Father David Lewis was arrested in 1678 at Llantarnam as he was preparing to say Mass. At his trial he was condemned as a Roman Catholic priest. Taking Mass was high treason and for this he was executed at Usk on Wednesday 27th August 1679. He was the last Welsh Catholic priest executed for his faith during the Protestant Reformation. Today pilgrims walk from St. David Lewis and St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church to the place of execution, now in the grounds of a large private home, they recite as they walk the Litany of Loreto. Abbott Paul Stonham of Belmont carries his relic through the town to Saint Mary’s Priory Church, where prayers are said at his grave and his relic can be venerated.
