Authentic Late Archaic period terracotta waterspuwer (gargoyle) modeled in the expressive form of a lion's head. Dating back to 520-500 BC and originating from the Greek colony of Poseidonia (later known as Paestum) in Campania, Italy, this artifact is currently preserved and exhibited in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Paestum. In ancient Greek architecture, highly stylized lion-headed spouts were integrated into the terracotta roof gutters (sima) of sacred temple buildings to effectively drain rainwater away from the stone walls while serving a symbolic, apotropaic role to ward off evil spirits. This sharp museum display photograph captures the surviving painted details, stylized whiskers, wide eyes, and raw textures of the ancient clay, making it highly valuable for academic textbooks, architecture journals, historical research, and travel publications.
