Hoi an is famed for its nightly flotilla of sampans (flat bottom boats) with its occupants releasing small colourful floating paper lanterns, each with a burning candle on the Thu Bon river that flows along the southern edge of the UNESCO-protected Ancient Town in Quang Nam province, central Vietnam. The event is billed as the ÔHoi an Lantern FestivalÕ and occurs as a nightly event from 6pm to 9.30pm. Hoi an is a UNESCO World Heritage site for its rich mixture of centuries old Chinese, Japanese, and French architecture and for its pedestrian-only old quarter with numerous narrow alleyways.
