Baku Azerbaijan January 11 2003 Students take exams at the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy in Baku as their teacher and lab assistant stay huddled in their coats to stay warm January 11 2003 Since the breakup of the Soviet Union and the war with Armenia the Academy has suffered dwindling enrollment and financial assistance so the once lavish school has little heating and it is not being renovated every year as it once was Now they are trying to adapt to the changing times by adding Business Degrees and exchange programs with Western Universities as well as adapting their ways of teaching and style of examinations This year some classes were tested in a typical Western style with all the students taking the exam at once while other classes like this one kept the old tradition of being examined one by one orally by the teacher photo by Ami Vitale
