Evolution is 33 metres long, with a 10 metre beam, four decks high and the largest commercial vessel built on the Gold Coast. Evolution also signals the resurgence of the city’s powerhouse marine industry. The $5.5 million commercial catamaran was built by Marine Engineering Consultants (MEC Yachts). Based at the Gold Coast City Marina, MEC is the largest commercial aluminium boat builder in Queensland. Owner and managing director Murray Owen said 60 staff and apprentices were employed in the 15-month design and build project. “This project highlights what can be done on the Gold Coast and shows the marine industry is well and truly back on track, ” Mr Owen said. He said MEC beat a Thai boat builder to win the tender for the contract. The 14th large commercial catamaran built by MEC, Evolution is the latest addition to the fleet for the Down Under Cruise and Dive Company in Cairns. The vessel underwent sea trials this week and heads to Cairns tomorrow where she will operate as a tourism day-dive boat on to the Great Barrier Reef. Evolution is surveyed for up to 200 passengers and 20 crew. The vessel is powered by twin 1500hp MAN diesel motors and has a maximum cruising speed of 25 knots. Features include hydraulically operated dive platforms, a VIP room, sun pads and lounges on the top deck, helicopter pad and a galley kiosk and bar.
