Winchester Hampshire Winchester Cathedral The Morley Library This room was built after completion of the Cathedral and was used by the monks of the Benedictine monastery There are ancient cupboards behind the wooden bookshelves In 1662 George Morley whose portrait is over the door was made Bishop of Winchester He told the Dean and Chapter that he would leave most of his personal collection of books to them for use by the clergy of this diocese He also left money to pay for the purchase of the two globes which had been made in Holland by the Blaeau family in about 1635 They and the books have been in this room ever since The bookcases tables and chairs are all of the 17th Century and the room appears now much as it did then The library is available now to researchers who have obtained permission to use it from the Canon Librarian
