The famous Laxey Wheel is the world's greatest industrial water wheel. It is known fondly as "lady Isablla'. Its main function was used to pump water from the nearby mines. It was built in 1854 in Laxey a few miles north of Douglas on the Isle of Man, Britain. The beer barrel shaped box is calledthe ÔBalance boxÕ. The counterweight at the front of the wheel is attached to the L rocker and moves up and down as the wheel revolves. The giant barrel was once filled with scraps of lead, and provided a balancing weight to the pumping rods which went deep underground. It also helped to keep the wheel turning at a steady speedÕ. The Isle of Man with its capital city, Douglas is located in the middle of the Irish Sea between northern England and northern Ireland. The island is independent of Britain and not a member of the European Union. It has the status of 'crown dependency', similar to Jersey and Guernsey in the Channel Islands But its inhabitants are British citizens. The Isle of Man is world famous for its annual TT motorcycle races and also it is the home of the rare cat, the Manx Cat as it has no tail.
