The Tree is a musical sculpture whose galvanised steel pipes emit notes when the wind blows through them (much like organ pipes). The sculpture demonstrates how wind energy can be harnessed for artistic ends - the sounds emitted change with the strength and direction of the wind. It is shaped like a tree that has grown to lean away from the wind. The Singing Ringing Tree is one of several panopticons (structures providing a comprehensive or panoramic view) on Lancashire moorland commissioned by Mid-Pennine Arts as part of an East Lancashire Regional Park Development Programme to link culture, heritage and the arts with the natural environment, and to attract visitors to the countryside. Designed by architects Mike Tonkin and Anna Liu and completed in 2006.
