Informations supplémentaires:
Monument to Jean Parisot de la Valette, Grand Master of the Order of St John and founder of Valletta, stands on a pedestal in de la Valette Square in the heart of UNESCO listed city centre. The monument is situated between two significant churches: St Catherine of Italy, built for the Italian Langue of the Knights, and Our Lady of Victory, the first church erected after the siege. The figure is shown in Renaissance attire, holding a rolled document and a pair of spectacles. Jean Parisot de la Valette (1494-1568) led the defence of Malta during the Great Siege of 1565 and later initiated the construction of Valletta. His monument stands prominently near St Catherine’s Church, a 16th century chapel built for the Italian Langue of the Knights Hospitaller.
