A view up the valley blocked by the Grande Dixence dam in Switzerland showing the typical U-shape of a glaciated valley. The figures of two walkers give a sense of scale. This dam is 285 metres high and was built between 1953 and 1961. It is one of the tallest dams in the world and is the highest in Europe. It holds back a lake the Lac des Dix which is approximately 4 km long. The top of the dam is at an altitude of 2365 metres in a steep mountain valley. When the lake is full, usually in late September, it is up to 284 metres deep and contains 400 million cubic metres of water. Tunnels carry the water to three power stations in the Rhône valley over 1800 metres below where it generates electricity.
