Thousands sing, dance and celebrate the Jewish holiday of Lag BaOmer at the gravesite of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai. Meron, Israel. 22/05/2011. There are a number of explanations as to the significance of the Jewish holiday of Lag BaOmer. One states that during the time of Rabbi Akiva 24, 000 of his students died from a plague. Jews celebrate Lag BaOmer as the traditional day that this plague ended. Another possible interpretation of this legend is that the students died as part of the Roman attempt to wipe out Judaism after the Bar Kokhba revolt. The day of Lag BaOmer is also celebrated as the anniversary of death of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, the greatest teacher of Torah in his generation. According to tradition, on the day of Bar Yochai's death, he revealed the deepest secrets of the Kabbalah. On the day of his death, Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai instructed his students to celebrate this day as a holiday to commemorate the vast amount of mystical teachings which were revealed to them. In Meron, the burial place of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai hundreds of thousands of religious Jews gather to celebrate with bonfires, torches, song and feasting. Celebrations go on throughout the night and escalate towards dawn. It is also a custom at the Meron celebrations that three-year-old boys are given their first haircuts while their parents distribute wine and sweets - a tradition called Halaka.
