The Phoenix UAV is among a number of unmanned surveillance aircraft which are used by the world's armed forces in dangerous locations and controlled via an operator on the ground. It has been reported by Taliban officials today, that an unmanned surveillance aircraft of unknown origin was shot down over northern Afghanistan, Saturday 22 September, 2001. Abdul Salam Zaeef, the hardlline Taliban's ambassador to Pakistan, said the aircraft was shot down over Tashgurgan Pass in Afghanistan's northern Samangan province by Taliban soldiers armed with Russian-made anti-aircraft weapons.
