Manchester, England, United Kingdom - Art Treasures Exhibition (1857)This was the natural follow-up to the Great Exhibition of 1851, but instead of highlighting industry and technology the Manchester event brought together the private art collections of Great Britain. Indeed the Exhibition held a third of the country's art treasures including works from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert who both visited. Metropolitan critics sneered and asked why the 'cotton spinning' city was bothering. Despite this the Exhibition was a total succes and druing its 142 days of operation more than 1.3 million people visited. This response was natural. The city was home to one of the great dealers in Agnews and, as Sir Austin Laynard reported, the wealthy locals had 'in their dwellings... many of the finest pictures which annually adorn the walls of the Royal Academy'. Out of the event which took place at Old Trafford came the Halle Orchestra. German Charles Halle had assembled a group of musicians to entertain the guests. The response encouraged him to form his eponymous orchestra. An unfinished work by Michelangelo, now at the National Gallery, gained the name, The Manchester Madonna, after display at the exhibition.
