I'd been eyeing this patch of rock shelf for many years, not really being able to find a type of light to take advantage of it, as it lies in the shadow of a cliff face and faces South East. Afternoon Sun would bring dramatic light but I wanted to retain detail so it had to be overcast, but of course I needed an interesting sky. Sounds complex, but nature ran its course and finally provided. It wasn't my first choice as I waited a little further on for a sunrise that never eventuated. Not to be defeated I retreated to this shot which became the image of the day. There's so much happening in such a small space. I used a wide angle to stretch it out and give perspective, using the tesselated sandstone platform as lead in lines. I wasnt sure at first aout the foreground rock but its detail and colour contrasts while also a stepping stone to the central rock and slice of headland in the distance, which as to remain hidden on purpose. 3 seperate images were taken at varying points of focus and those focused areas combined together to form one image to retain near to far focus, much like a view cameras movements. The sky sets the mood while also balancing the colour in the foreground rock. A 2 stop ND Grad tones down the sky to retain the detail as I waited for a break in the cloud so more light would filter through in the foreground while the back ground is slightly darker, providing just enough light without harsh shadow.
