A man lights luminary candles along a roadway in Cheshire Connecticut to commemorate the death of three murder victims killed in 2007 during a home invasion by two recently released parolees. Two paroled convicts who met in a halfway house took the Petit family hostage on July 23, killing 48-year-old Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her daughters, Hayley, 17, and Michaela, 11. The lone survivor, Dr. William Petit Jr., was severely beaten but escaped. The crime has sparked legislation for tougher prison terms and parole requirements. 130, 000 luminaries were lit around the town on January 6th, 2008. The fundraiser for the Connecticut chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society raised more than $100, 000 for Hayley's Hope & Michaela's Miracle Fund, founded by Dr. Petit and named after his two daughters.
