Institute of Mohamed Ali for the Research of the Eastern Tradition (I.M.A.R.E.T.) Imaret or Kulliye, historical monument building, it is situated in Poulidou street, in the old quarter of Panagia in Kavala, overlooking at the bay and harbor of the city. It is a well-preserved reminiscence of the last Ottoman period and Islamic architecture built between 1817-21 by the last Egyptian dynasty founder, Mehmet Ali, identified also on the respected street sign, adjuscent to Poulidou str, leading to his house, in the old city quarter. Imaret can be observed as a long series of buildings complex with domes and chimneys, with flat facades. Its interior space walls are emphasized by entrance halls exhibiting inscriptions in Arabic scripts. It served as a hostel for Medressa, Muslim seminary students, as well as an shelter for the poor of the city, regardless of religion. Since 1922, Imaret housed refugee until 1967, when its residents ordered to leave and the monument was sealed and deserted. A local entrepreneur from Kavala, leased it for 50 years, since 2001, who after restoration, converted into a luxurious boutique hotel and restaurant.
