Whitwell has become renowned for the Paper Clips Project, a Holocaust memorial and educational project, that was carried out by children of the local middle school starting in 1998. The Cjhildren's Holocaust memorial consists of a German Transport car used to move Jews to the concentration camps. The car itself houses 11 million paper clips , one for each victim of the Holocaust , and some artifacts . The Paper clips are one for every victim of the Holocaust . The Idea , suggested by a student has outgrown its aim and the response to a simple web site totaled between 11 and 50million clips and support from many individuals and groups. The rail car was purchased in Germany the Schroeder family from a railroad museum in Germany and is authentic . the Library and study room has over 50 thousand artifacts and books all available for perusal and hosts groups and individuals interested in the project.
