Interior detail showing the ceiling inside The Star Inn on Church Street in Godalming, Surrey, covered with dozens of historic real ale pump clips and beer badges collected from breweries across Britain and beyond. The photograph records a colourful, densely packed display of cask ale branding, brewery artwork, local beer names, pump clip typography and pub memorabilia above the bar area of a traditional English public house. The warm indoor lighting, timber beams and crowded ceiling create strong pub character. The Star is a long-established Godalming pub with a strong reputation for real ale, cider and perry. The pub’s own history notes a tavern on the site from 1832, with the present building retaining older character, while CAMRA describes The Star as a beerhouse from soon after 1830, with parts of the building older still. CAMRA also records the pub as offering up to 14 cask ales at busy times, alongside ciders and perries, and notes that hundreds of pub clips hang between the dark oak beams. This makes the image useful for illustrating beer collecting, brewery heritage, CAMRA culture, cask ale traditions, independent pubs and local drinking places. Pump clips are an important part of British real ale culture because they identify the beer, brewery, strength, style and the humour or visual identity behind each brew. A ceiling full of them becomes a documentary archive of changing breweries, seasonal ales, regional brewing, pub festivals and the social networks around beer enthusiasts. The image also reflects wider themes including hospitality, leisure, pub tourism, community, alcohol retail, small breweries, traditional interiors and the preservation of characterful public houses in market towns. The visible ceiling display turns an everyday pub interior into a textured record of Britain’s brewing scene, with bright labels and badges adding colour and commercial visual interest for editorial uses linked to beer, pubs, tourism and social life.
