The descriptive plaque reads as follows:- GREENSIDE LIME KILN was preserved in 2009 and is dedicated to the memory of Dr.John Satchell who was Chairman of Kendal Civic Society for many years. Through his enthusiasm the Lime Kiln was designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument and saved from dereliction to become an enduring link between the lime burning industry and the Kendal to Lancaster Canal by which the town prospered in the 19th century. KENDAL CIVIC SOCIETY. A lime kiln is a kiln used for the calcination of limestone (calcium carbonate) to produce the form of lime called quicklime (calcium oxide). The Greenside Lime Kiln is a draw kiln, a stone structure, the chalk or limestone was layered with wood, coal or coke and lit. As it burnt through, lime was extracted from the bottom of the kiln, through the draw hole. Further layers of stone and fuel were added to the to the top.
