Informations supplémentaires:
Ukrainian supporters and members of the Ukrainian community gather in St Peter's Square, Manchester, on Saturday 22 August 2026, carrying and unfurling a long blue and yellow national flag ahead of Ukraine's Independence Day on 24 August. The 2026 anniversary marked 35 years since Ukraine declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, and public gatherings across Britain combined celebration of Ukrainian identity, culture and national sovereignty with continued solidarity during Russia's full-scale invasion. In the photograph, participants hold the large horizontal Ukrainian flag through the city-centre square, while others wear blue and yellow colours, carry smaller flags and traditional embroidered clothing associated with Ukrainian heritage. Manchester and Greater Manchester have become home to a significant Ukrainian community, including people displaced since Russia's invasion of February 2022, making events such as this both cultural celebrations and visible demonstrations of support for an independent Ukraine. The image is relevant to Ukraine Independence Day, Ukrainian diaspora, Manchester Ukrainians, solidarity with Ukraine, Stand with Ukraine, blue and yellow flag, Ukrainian national flag, European security, refugees, displaced people, war in Ukraine, Russia Ukraine war, Ukrainian culture, national identity, democracy, freedom, sovereignty, peace, community rally, public demonstration and city-centre protest photography. Two days later, on 24 August 2026, Ukraine officially marked its 35th Independence Day while the UK government reiterated support for Ukrainian sovereignty, territorial integrity and a just and lasting peace. The Manchester gathering therefore records a contemporary moment in the UK's continuing public support for Ukraine, as Ukrainians abroad maintain national traditions, commemorate independence and keep attention focused on the continuing war and their country's future in Europe. Flags are vivid symbols of UK solidarity.
