Graus, Ribagorça or Ribagorza county, Huesca province, Aragon, Spain: statue of Christ the Redeemer of La Ribagorza (El Cristo Redentor de La Ribagorza), or Monument to the Sacred Heart, rises above houses on the main square, Plaza Mayor or Plaza de España of Graus. The statue, seen here before its 2018 restoration, is on top of a rock, the Peña del Morral, and recalls the statue of Christ the Redeemer which dominates Rio de Janeiro. The Graus statue was sculpted by Jaume Martos, who was linked to the Olot School of religious imagery, and erected in 1950. The 2018 restoration work included replacing the statue’s head and one hand, reinforcing the internal structure and covering the exterior with a layer of marble. A cast of the new head was placed on a pedestal in the gardens of the parish church of San Miguel. Graus is a village in the Spanish Pyrenees in one of the areas where the Aragonese language is still spoken. It is the administrative capital of Ribagorza county. In 1063, El Cid took part in the Battle of Graus at which the King of Aragon was killed. D1084.B2944
