A passenger/ car ferry, Corsica ferries and Sardinia ferries approaching the port of Calvi in Corsica as it sails past the Calvi citadel on a hill. The fortress was built by the Genoese who invaded Corsica from Italy in the thirteenth century and remained here for over four hundred years. Corsica, a French island off the south coast of France in the Mediterranean, is the birthplace of two famous men – Christopher Columbus who was born in 1436 in the citadel that dominates the town's skyline. And the other, is Napoleon Bonaparte who was born on the island. The citadel was built by the Genoese who invaded Corsica from Italy in the thirteenth century and remained here for over four hundred years. Napoleon Bonaparte’s godfather, Laurent Giubega who lived in the citadel, helped Napoleon and his family to flee to France. English Admiral Nelson lost his eye in the 18-day battle when he besieged Calvi in 1794.
