. East Midlands Railway Class 170 unit 170505 stands at Derby railway station with a member of railway staff on the platform. The Class 170 Turbostar is a diesel multiple-unit design developed for regional passenger services, with units used by several British train operators since the late 1990s. East Midlands Railway employs Class 170s on regional routes linking cities and towns across the East Midlands and neighbouring areas, making the type a familiar part of passenger rail operations around Derby. Derby itself has an unusually strong railway identity. The city developed as a major railway centre during the nineteenth century and remains closely associated with train manufacture, engineering, maintenance and the wider rail supply industry. Its station is an important interchange for regional and inter-city services, with routes towards destinations including Sheffield, Nottingham, Birmingham, Leicester and London. The photograph shows the everyday operational side of the network rather than a ceremonial railway scene: a modern multiple unit at the platform, station lighting and staff carrying out duties alongside the train. The EMR purple livery provides a clear visual identifier for the operator, while the unit number allows the individual train to be identified precisely. Images of numbered rolling stock are particularly useful for documenting fleet changes, liveries and passenger operations over time. This view combines railway technology, public transport, staff activity and Derby’s continuing importance as one of Britain’s principal railway cities. Class 170 units are formed from self-propelled diesel coaches, allowing regional services to operate without a separate locomotive. Their wide use across Britain reflects the need for flexible rolling stock capable of serving both busy city corridors and longer cross-country regional journeys. The recorded subject is east Midlands Railway Class 170 unit 170505 at Derby station, England.
