Gatwick and Stansted charged £10 for their closest terminal drop-off facilities, while Edinburgh and Bristol charged £8.50. By contrast, many leading airports elsewhere in Europe continued to provide a short free terminal drop-off period. Airport operators argue that forecourt charges help manage congestion, encourage public transport use and reduce vehicle emissions around terminals. Critics regard them as another unavoidable travel expense, particularly for families carrying heavy luggage and people who need assistance. Although airports generally provide free alternatives in more distant car parks, these can require passengers to use a shuttle bus or walk further.
