The New River is an artificial waterway that was completed in 1613 in order to supply fresh, clean water to London. It originally only drew water from the springs at Chadwell and Amwell, but by the early 18th century, this supply was inadequate and so authority was obtained to draw water directly from the River Lea. The New Gauge House was built in 1856 to control the amount of water drawn and to house the gauge keeper who operated it. The New River originally extended over 42 miles but over the centuries, its course has been straightened and sections of it have been altered to travel underground in pipes. The water used to end in a pool known as the New River Head next to Sadler's Wells theatre from where it was piped across London. Now it ends in reservoirs at Stoke Newington
