The Desert Botanical Garden is a living museum of some 50, 000 plants representing more than 4, 000 species. They offer education, research, exhibition, and conservation of desert plants from around the world with emphasis on species from the Sonoran Desert — southern Arizona and south to Mexico. One of the star attractions is the Butterfly Pavilion, a standout attraction introduced in 2002. The current facility is a 3, 200 square foot open-air structure with screen walls and roof to provide a natural environment for the plants and butterflies. In the spring, the pavilion features the diverse butterflies of the Southwest region. In the fall, Monarch butterflies rule the space. There are no predators so the butterflies age gracefully but often exhibit imperfections in their wings — in nature, predators would have probably removed them from the population. Continuing our tour through the Butterfly Pavilion, here is a common Buckeye butterfly. They have large eye-spots which tend to deter predators.
