Xian became the starting point of the Silk Road trade when a court official, Zhang Qian, originally sent by Emperor Wudi to search for allies to guard against a threat from the Xiongnu, returned with information about Central Asia. Zhang Qian returned to Central Asia with a large delegation with various goods to trade and silk soon became highly valued by the Romans. Xian was the imperial capital of China from the 11th century BC and remained so until after the Tang Dynasty. The success of the Silk Road led to developments in culture and architecture. Big Wild Goose Pagoda was built by Emperor Li Zhi in 652 to house the many Buddhist manuscripts brought back from India by Xuan Zang who had spent 18 years studying Buddhism there.
