Informations supplémentaires:
The concentration camp at Falkensee was one of the largest satellite camps of Sachsenhausen. It covered an area of 17 hectares and consisted of 9 long, but narrow barracks buildings, medical block, kitchen, disinfection block and other buildings. The camp was surrounded by two rows of electrified barbed wire fence with armed guards and there are remains of a watch tower. The camp was originally built in 1938 as a railway repair workshop. The camp was in use from January 1943 till 26 April 1945 when the Soviet forces arrived. It housed between 1600 and 2500 men and women from all over Europe. The conditions for the prisoners were harsh with 14 hour days, lack of food, long roll calls and beatings. The prisoners worked outside the camp in the aircraft and armaments industries. Most of the buildings were demolished after the war and the area was turned into an historical park in 1995. The original camp has been landscaped and there are pathways. There are various places to sit and a lake which borders two sides of the original camp. There are various display boards of the camp and plaques which border where the various building were located all of which are only in German. The outer edge of the camp is bordered by a cycle pathway from Spandau.
