On 15th January 2005 London held its first 'Russian Winter Festival': timed to coincide with the Russian 'Old New Year' in the pre-revolutionary Tsarist calendar, a date still celebrated in Russia in mid-January. The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone welcomed guests including the Deputy Mayor Shvetsova of Moscow and veterans of the Second World War from both Russia and Britain. Hundreds of artists, from folk dancers to modern pop groups, entertained a crowd of over 50, 000 people. The Red Army Choir performed in their first visit to the UK in 40 years. Founded more than 70 years ago by soldiers who took part in the Bolshevik revolution, the choir was renamed in 1978 after Boris Alexandrov, who led it for 40 years from 1946 to 1986. The second festival is scheduled for 14th January 2006, falling exactly on Russian Old New Year's Day.
