Contemporary lithograph colour print showing an aerial view of the Paris Exposition Universelle (universal exposition) in 1867. The site of the Exposition was the Champ de Mars, the great military parade ground of Paris, which covered an area of 119 acres. The principal building, clearly visible in the print, was rectangular in shape with rounded ends and was 1608 feet (490m) long and 1247 feet (380m) wide. In the centre of that building was a pavilion topped by a dome and surrounded by a garden which was 545 feet (166m) long and 184 feet (56m) wide, with a gallery built completely around it. There were also nearly 100 smaller buildings on the grounds. The Exposition, which formally opened on April 1 and closed on October 31, was the greatest ever held up to that date. More than 50, 000 exhibitors attended and there were more than nine million visitors. Lithograph by Eugene Ciceri (1813 - 1890), artist Philippe Benoist (1813 - 1905).
