According to Daoist (also spelled Taoist) teachings, Liu Hanshan (left) was a Chinese court official in the 10th century A.D. who became one of the immortals. He also became a folk symbol of good fortune. In paintings, he is always depicted with a three-legged toad as in this old Chinese illustration. Pictured with both in this image is Shi-to (also spelled Shide and Shih-teh), an eccentric Budhhist monk of the Tang period. The two figures, placed together, symbolize an attempt to blend Daoism and Budhhism.
