The "garden of water" known also as (Kipos tou Nerou in Greek) recreational theme park is an architectural space where water is the predominant element characterising its overall atmosphere and bonds with nature. The presense of water makes the garden a pleasant place to chillout especially during the hot days of summer. A wooden pergola is constructed along the length of the garden situated in between Thessaloniki's New promenade (waterfront) and Meg. Alexandrou avenue, to accommodate the perimetric pavement around the large elongated water surface of the garden, planted with hydrophilic plants (water lilies and reeds) and grass on the ground, providing shelter for its inhabitants (frogs, turtles, fish). A cafe is open during daytime allowing visitors to relax and listen to the mating sounds of the frogs during spring time. In 2000, the Municipality of Thessaloniki launched an International Architectural Competition for the redevelopment of the New Waterfront and in 2006 the construction begun. The total length of the New Waterfront is 3km and hosts about 239.000 sq.meters of green spaces and 12.000 sq. meters of playgrounds.
