Last year the world was gripped by news that cosmic rays had revealed a hidden chamber inside the Pyramid of Khufu in Egypt. Cosmic muons are high-energy particles produced in our upper atmosphere. These form part of the natural background radiation with dozens harmlessly passing through us every minute. David Mahon explains how scientists around the world are now using muons’ ability to penetrate rock and other materials to address many challenges that affect society. From predicting the magnitude of volcanic eruptions to identifying defects within bridges and providing unique insight into nuclear waste, muography is playing an exciting and important role across the globe. David Mahon is an award-winning physics researcher and an aspiring young entrepreneur. David completed his Ph.D. in experimental nuclear physics at the University of Glasgow in 2010 and has gone on to become one of the pioneers of cosmic-ray muography research in Europe. He combines his role of research fellow at the University of Glasgow with his position as Director of Lynkeos Technology Ltd., the first company in the UK to specialise in this innovative imaging technology.
