A local Chinese resident tests the banking service of Chinese online bank WeBank on his smartphone in Shanghai, China, 18 January 2015. China's big experiment in Internet banking has finally begun. WeBank, an online bank created by Chinese Internet giant Tencent Holdings and its local partners, just started trial operation Sunday (18 January 2015). WeBank said employees of its shareholders such as Tencent can now open their accounts and deposit money. The bank, which doesn't have any brick-and-mortar branches, is also offering loans to select customers. A person familiar with WeBank said the trial will likely take about four months, and the Internet bank is expected to officially launch its business for all customers around May. Online banking is the next big battlefield for Chinese Internet companies. In July, a group that includes Tencent won permission from Chinese regulators to open WeBank. In September, regulators also gave approval to the financial-services affiliate of e-commerce company Alibaba Group Holding to open an online bank.
